How does Apple’s Recent Release of Safari 4 Affect me as an Elluminate Live! User?

June 30/2009

Description:

It was recently reported that if Safari 4 was installed, some Elluminate Live! sessions would unexpectedly quit, giving no error or reason as to why. It has further been determined that this only affects Elluminate Live! sessions and recordings on V8.5 and prior.

Solution:

To resolve this for Elluminate Live! sessions, we recommend upgrading your Elluminate Live! to the latest release, V9 or later at your earliest convenience.

  • For on-premise server customers, we encourage you to upgrade to the latest version of Elluminate. The Elluminate Live! server with Elluminate Live! V9.5 and the Elluminate Live! Manager 3.0 is available for download from the Elluminate Support Portal. Your Elluminate server administrator can follow the steps to install and update your server.

Since Elluminate Live! recordings always play in the version they were created in, we have the following solution for you to ensure your V8.5 recordings will continue to play.

  • For Hosted customers, Elluminate’s Operations Team has already made the necessary changes to ensure your V8.5 recordings play.
  • For Server customers, your server administrators will need to make the following modifications to the Elluminate Live! Manager as outlined here:

Remove the lines

<nativelib href="vcBrowserMacOSXppc.jar"/> and <nativelib href="vcBrowserMacOSXx86.jar"/>

from:

ElluminateLive/manager/tomcat/webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/resources/templates/jnlp/play_recording.jnlp.v85

Below is a sample of text in the file and what you need to remove.

  • <resources os="Mac\ OS\ X" arch="ppc">
  • <nativelib href="vcPlatformMacOSXppc.jar"/>
  • <nativelib href="vcAudioMacOSXppc.jar"/>
  • <nativelib href="vcBrowserMacOSXppc.jar"/> « remove this line
  • </resources>

  • <resources os="Mac\ OS\ X" arch="i386">
  • <nativelib href="vcPlatformMacOSXx86.jar"/>
  • <nativelib href="vcAudioMacOSXx86.jar"/>
  • <nativelib href="vcBrowserMacOSXx86.jar"/> « remove this line
  • </resources>

You may notice that Web Tour and Multimedia in V8.5 recordings function differently than you may have experienced in the live session. For instance, Web Tour will become Web Push, meaning instead of pages loading in one window within the Elluminate Live! session, they will open in separate browser windows outside of Elluminate Live!.

How does Apple’s Recent Release of Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 Affect me as an Elluminate User?

June 26/2009

Description:

The latest update from Apple, Java SE 6 Update 4, has modified the association between JNLP files and Java Web Start. A couple of examples are: you may find your session opening with another application like Elluminate Publish! or you may find that the usual JNLP icon on your desktop is blank and the program used to open the file cannot be found.

Solution:

Open any Elluminate Live! session available to you (your free vRoom or the Elluminate configuration room are suggestions).

If the JNLP file opens in anything other than an Elluminate Live! session:

  1. Save the file to your desktop with a jnlp file extension, eg. Meeting.jnlp
  2. Right click or Control click on the JNLP file and select Open With -> Other
  3. In the "Choose Application" window, in the left panel, select the appropriate boot device.
  4. Browse to /System/Library/CoreServices/Java Web Start.app
  5. Check the box for "Always Open With" and then click the "Open" button.
  6. If the Java Web Start.app file is greyed out/not selectable, make sure to enable "All Applications".

All Mac systems have a CoreServices folder in the filepath above. Please make sure you perform a thorough search if you cannot locate it.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Elluminate Technical Support and they will be happy to assist you

Java Upgrade

Windows users of Java 1.6 should upgrade to version 1.6.0_12

March 15/2009

Recent testing has shown that the 1.6.0_12 version of Java shows a better user experience than the previous versions. Elluminate recommends that users on Windows update to this version of Java at the earliest opportunity - you can find the latest version at the Sun Java download page.
